State defence secrets and other sensitive material such as personal records certainly justify shredding, but it is doubtful that all classes of material are confidential enough to warrant this expensive treatment. It costs a company less, significantly reduces fuel use, and is more practical to collect paper for recycling in its normal compact form, rather than shredded, which is full of air, lighter and more bulky, and takes up more space both in an office and in a vehicle, often generating greater mileage and more frequent trips. Yet the security industry is massive, ad growing all the time. Some say it is in the interests of confidential security shredding companies to induce paranoia. Are your employees trustworthy? Have you a secure area where paper can be stored that doesn't need shredding? Ask yourself seriously: does this really need to be shredded? Perhaps some does and some doesn't - this could save you staff time and collection fees.
Confidentiality is a matter either of degree or the need to comply with the Data Protection Act: a more economical option may be possible such as a limited certificate of disposal. This is often provided free and specifies the disposal route of a particular consignment, generally to a named merchant who will bale and forward to a re-pulping mill for destruction. The paper will pay more, and be more recyclable, if you can shred white paper separately from coloured paper, or thin cardboard files etc. White paper can of course be re-made into white paper.
Many companies and organisations offer a confidential shredding service - if some or all of your paper really must be shredded, try to choose a service based locally.
