In a joint initiative with Avon Friends of the Earth, and assisted by a grant from the Civic Trust, a purpose built trailer drawn by two Percheron horses has recently been introduced for weekly kerbside collection in Bath & Wansdyke. Cages for paper, glass and cans are placed on the dray, with boxes for rags, oil, foil and batteries incorporated beneath, and their doors doubling as steps. The vehicle can carry about 1.75 tonnes of materials fully loaded, collecting about 3.5 tonnes a day. Benefits are: quiet, pollution free, and more manoeuvrability, particularly in small spaces, demonstrating that the project is economic and practical. The horses also attract interest, which may boost participation. Bath has already achieved the government's 25% recycling and composting target, helped by a weekly green box service and mini-recycling centres at flats.
